The Charing Cross Garden came into being in 1953 with a group of women who shared a love of gardening. The purpose of the club is to promote community beautification and to share knowledge and plants with each other. The Charing Cross Garden Club maintains gardens by the Needs parking lot, at the cross by the Home Hardware store, the Fire Department, by the New Ross welcome sign, and in front of the Post Office. Members have also planted trees throughout town in memory of past members or to commemorate special occasions.
The club meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Christian Education Centre except for January and February. Activities are included at the end of most meetings and occasionally special speakers are invited. Meetings are concluded with a lunch and tea. Each year members enjoy a pot luck supper, a barbecue and a Traditional Turkey Christmas dinner. Members also go on a club outing during the summer and during the New Ross Exhibition, the club hosts a successful and well attended Flower Show at the exhibition grounds. Most years a number of members participate with the New Ross consolidated School children in planting a butterfly garden for their science class butterfly project. The club also hosts a yearly Canada Day celebration in the Needs Parking lot for the whole community. Every year the club recognizes some community members for their gardens and yards with a special certificate.
Several members attend the annual conference of The Nova Scotia Association of Garden Clubs and members also attend the Annual District Meeting which is hosted in turn by clubs in their designated district.
